why we do it
There are over 500,000 hectares of garden in Great Britain. These spaces, big or small, can all be enjoyed by people and wildlife. Everything from a simple sustainably sourced patio with raised beds, to a wildflower meadow can improve our wellbeing and help the decline of many of Britain’s most valued species.
Wildlife
Garden bird numbers are down, e.g the Tree Sparrow by 95%. Hedgehogs are now classed as a vulnerable species. Precious habitats destroyed every year, e.g 110,000 miles of hedgerow have been lost in the last decade alone. Ponds which support delicate ecosystems are disappearing. Pollinators, especially bees are in serious danger, putting food supply under threat.
people
The numerous benefits to health and wellbeing of having access to even small amounts of nature are well known. It supports feelings of calm, happiness, and relaxation. Whether in a private garden, business, or communal space, being at one with nature and having access to usable outdoor spaces is valuable to both people and the environment.
