Restoring Character & Strength – A Two-Part Garden Enhancement
For this project on the grounds of an 18th-century estate, we tackled two key improvements: the restoration of a large pergola and the enhancement of a feature statue with elegant planting.
The original 30-year-old pergola had deteriorated significantly—its wobbly upright posts and rotting cross beams were struggling under the weight of an overgrown jasmine and climbing roses. To preserve the integrity of the space, we carefully trimmed back the climbers before replacing the entire structure with new, pressure-treated timber. While we kept the original design, our reconstruction was stronger, levelled, and built to last, ensuring both safety and longevity.
The second phase of the project focused on elevating a statue within the garden, raising it by a foot and surrounding it with a circular sandstone cobble border. We introduced a soft, textured contrast with ornamental grasses, while the surrounding planting bed was designed with a pollinator-friendly purple theme. Featuring campanula, hebe, chamomile, creeping thyme, berberis, phlox, and heuchera, the new scheme adds seasonal interest, movement, and biodiversity.
With careful attention to heritage, design, and functionality, this project is built to last.
